Notes from the Director

This organization is a not-for-profit humane animal shelter that, in the last five years, has achieved some rather spectacular changes.

1. Not only does the Animal Welfare League have one of the lowest return rates in the state of Indiana, but their return rate is one of the lowest in the entire United States. (This means they are doing a good job of placement and matching healthy pets to new homes so very few pets are returned once adopted.

2. This A.W.L. shelter also has a wonderful record of adoption that FAR exceeds the adoption rate of shelters of equal size in the United States! This information comes from a nationwide study of comparable shelters in the US and was done by the Science Diet Company.

3. This shelter and staff has accomplished much under some tough circumstances (old, deteriorating facility). BUT your help will put this shelter into a new facility soon. We are embarking on a capital campaign and already have model drawings available.

4. This shelter not only helps pets, (strays, surrendered pets, unwanted, even pure bred are frequently available) but it is well-known for helping people too. From the wheelchair bound, to kids camps, to rehabilitating community service needs, to fostering pets for abused women, to autistic children, to school visits, this shelter provides assistance to all walks of life in our community.

5. There are also tremendous health benefits of pet ownership and much more information things such as "how to volunteer", as well as general info on the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County, elsewhere on this web site. You can also find out more about us on Facebook at AWLeague.
