Before calling us or taking any further steps, please check with neighbors and nearby places to see if anyone recognizes the animal! Most of the time, lost animals don’t wander too far from their home!

If you have found a stray, please call or message us! We will make a lost report on our end and cross-match found reports to see if anyone has reported that pet as missing. If there are no reports, we will resort to the next step.

Please take the pet to any local vet or bring it to us to have it scanned for a microchip for free!

  • If it has a microchip, we or any local vet can look up the microchip number and as long as it is registered to the owner’s name, they will be contacted right away!
  • If there is no microchip, please give us a call at (574) 267-3008 and check to see if we can take in the stray. We would love to accept every stray, but sometimes we just don’t have the space at the time and we can either refer you to other local rescues or contact you at a later time when we do have the space if you are able to care for the animal until then.

If you have found a stray and it’s not microchipped and you are keeping it at home with you until an owner is found, please post a photo of the pet and the area where you found it to community lost and found pet pages and groups on Facebook! Some popular pages for Kosciusko County include:

  • Kosciusko County Lost and Found Pets (Indiana)
    • We personally post our strays here!

You should also check https://www.pawboost.com/ and https://lost.petcolove.org/ to see if your found pet is listed under a lost report there! If not, register them as a found animal!

If you found a stray pet after hours and absolutely cannot hold that animal overnight, please contact the non-emergency Sheriffs Department at 574-267-5667 option 3. They will dispatch an officer to meet you at the shelter to safely house the animal.

Our shelter does not pick up animals. You must call Animal Control who are employed through the Sheriffs Department at 574-267-5667 option 3 and ask for an animal control officer.

Protect Your Pet

In addition to keeping a collar with identification tags on your pet at all times, microchipping is an effective form of permanent identification. It can be used in any kind of animal at any age and will last an animal’s lifetime.

We here at AWL offer a microchipping service by appointment. Call us at (574) 267-3008 to schedule a microchip appointment!
